Why recolour the WordPress admin?
The stock WordPress dashboard looks the same on every site on the internet. If you hand a site to a client, that grey admin is the last thing they see before they start paying you — and the first thing they see every morning afterwards. A dashboard that carries the client's own colours reads as a finished product rather than a generic install.
WordPress ships eight fixed admin colour schemes and no way to add a ninth without writing CSS. This generator gives you every token the admin actually uses — menu background, active menu, links, buttons, notices, table rows — and compiles your choices into a small plugin that registers your palette as a ninth scheme. It shows up in Users → Profile → Admin Color Scheme alongside Fresh and Midnight, and you can switch back at any time.
How it works
- Pick a preset, or set each colour token by hand.
- Watch the mock dashboard above update as you go.
- Adjust typography, border radius, and sidebar width.
- Export. You get a .zip plugin and the raw CSS.
- Upload it under Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, and activate.
- Your colours apply straight away. To switch back, pick another scheme under Users → Profile.
Frequently asked questions
Is the WordPress admin color generator free?
Yes. You can design and preview an unlimited number of admin color schemes for free. Exporting the finished scheme as a plugin requires an email address so we can send you the download link.
How do I install the generated color scheme?
The generator produces a standard WordPress plugin as a .zip file. In your WordPress dashboard go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, choose the .zip, install it, and activate. Your admin colors change immediately.
Will it break when WordPress updates?
No. The generated plugin only adds CSS custom properties to the admin head. It does not patch core files, so WordPress updates leave it untouched.
Can I edit the colors after exporting?
Yes. Return to this page, adjust the palette, and export again. You can also open the generated PHP file and edit the stylesheet directly.
Does this work with WP Adminify?
Yes. The generator targets the stock WordPress admin, and the exported plugin works alongside WP Adminify. WP Adminify additionally gives you menu editing, dashboard widgets, dark mode, and a full admin theme system.
